With very little time left, and many activities coming up, I have decided to complete the following in the upcoming days:
Math: Complete lessons 107 --- 120 (the last lesson) Students will take two tests: first one on 5/14/15 and the second one on 5/20/15 InshaAllah.
The last spelling test will be on 5/15/15. The words will be from the list that students already have.
We will do some serious writing (expository narrative) in the little time we have left. Students will also practice cursive handwriting.
For reading I will wrap up Esperanza Rising and follow up with activities and classwork to check for understanding.
In science human body will be covered along with weathering and erosion.
Islamic studies will focus on Islam in Northern Africa and Ramadan.
Other than the tests I have already mentioned, there will be continuous in class discussion and evaluations for grading to be fair.
Friday's International Day was a super hit, and that was made possible because of the wonderful parents like you all. The kids worked in groups on their own and presented themselves very well. They have talent and we need to tap them the right way.Also, thanks for the time that you all gave at the booth at the carnival yesterday.
As far as this week's teaching is concerned, everything will revolve around Terra Nova testing standards. The basics of math, grammar, reading,science, and social studies will be covered. From next week InshaAllah, I will move fast trying to catch up with whatever is left in the curriculum to teach.
one down, one more to go
Last week students finished the IOWA test, and from tomorrow they will be practicing for the Terra Nova InshaAllah. In addition to Language, Reading Comprehension, and Math ,this test includes science and social studies.From the practice tests that I have seen, students will be tested on skills not strictly on content.
This week students will take TWO TESTS:Math on 4/20/15 and Spelling on 5/1/15. Please make sure your child studies for the tests. With a little bit of effort from you and me students can raise the bar of their performance significantly.
International Day in on May 1, and i would appreciate it if you could send some souvenirs like handicrafts, pictures, flags etc for classroom display. Please, make sure you do not send anything that is fragile or expensive. Thank you for your continued support and cooperation.
Math: Lessons 103 --- 105
Science:Objectives covered by TerraNova. Like water cycle, rock cycle, scientific methods, renewable and non-renewable sources.
Social Studies: Finding coordinates of cities, functions of branches of government, identify resources on maps, interpret graphs, charts etc.
IOWA Test schedule and reminders
As you are all aware, IOWA Test will begin on Tuesday, April 21, 2015, and will end on Thursday, April 23, 2015. On the first day students will take reading comprehension and vocabulary test. On the second day they will take language test, and on the final day they will take math.
The past couple of weeks students practiced in class and also took packets to complete as homework. This made them familiar with the format of the test and test taking skills. I am hoping that they will apply the skills practiced with accuracy on the days of the tests, InshaAllah.
Please, make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast in the morning and brings a jacket, because some students get cold and that interferes with their concentration level.
Last Friday almost every student scored high on the spelling test and math homework. A big THANK YOU to all of you for working with your child, and I hope this trend will continue till the end of the school year, InshaAllah.
As far as classroom activities for this week, I will be focusing on topics covered by the IOWA Tests. To name some: spelling rules, vocabulary, subject verb agreement, capitalization and punctuation rules, inference and generalization, estimation, key words in math problems that help with problem solving, probability, etc. Please, remind your child to focus and pace well so that time is utilized wisely. Reading: Daily test practices that will cover finding the main idea, context clues, inference and generalization questions from different genres like fiction, non-fiction, fable, poem, myth, and legend.
Grammar: Revising and editing, adverb, conjunction, and preposition
Science; Rocks and minerals, weathering and erosion
Islamic Studies : Islam in North Africa
Spelling and vocabulary: Spelling and vocabulary test will be o 4/17/15.
Classroom updates/terra Nova/iowa
With the two standardized tests knocking at the door, I am trying my best to prepare my students so that they are able to do well InshaAllah. Test practices are done on a regular basis in class, and as I mentioned earlier please remind your child to do the home work carefully.
Math:Lessons 92 --- 95 will be covered. In addition objectives pertaining to the upcoming tests will be taught.
Spelling Test: 4/10/15 Test will be from the second column of the misspelled words list that was passed out last week.
Social Studies: Will do a lot of map activities and cover key concepts of economy: import, export, capital, goods,income.
Reading: Read fables, poems, fiction, and non-fiction articles to reinforce Iowa/Terra Nova objectives.
Testing Schedule: Science Test: 3/30/15
Math Test: 4/2/15 (Lessons 81 --- 90)
Spelling Test: 4/3/15
Math lessons 90 and investigation will be covered. Also, review will be done in class to prep students for the test.
Language: Usage and mechanics and daily language review
Reading: Esparanza Rising: Read chapters in class together and answer questions.
Science: Rock Cycle
Social Studies: Economy and government
Please, tell your child to take CTB and ITBS practices seriously. If they become familiar with the format and language of the tests they will be able to do well in the the tests InshaAllah.
classroom news/ terra nova
End of Spring Break means racing against time to catch up on curriculum and preparing students for standardized tests like Terra Nova and Iowa tests. Both are achievement tests for which I will be practicing with the kids regularly so that they are well prepared. I am asking for a little help from you so that students are applying everything that I ask them to do. Students will be bringing in homework in reading, language, math, science, and social studies ---- subjects covered in Terra Nova and Iowa. Please make sure they highlight or underline keywords because it is a very effective test taking strategy.
In Math lessons 87 --- 90 will be covered.
Reading: Students will read five chapters from Esperanza Rising. Assessments will be done accordingly.
In Language Arts students will revise, edit, and use parts of speech to improve writing skills.
In Science chapter on rocks, minerals, and agents of erosion will be covered.
Social Studies: Mexican independence, features of U.S. government and economic system will be taught.
Islamic Studies: Islam in Northern Africa will be covered.
Assessments are regularly done and you will be informed about major tests in advance and students will be be given study guides to lessen the stress of tests. Please, feel free to send me an email on Orbund if you have any questions or concerns, and I will reply ASAP InshaAllah.
Students are looking forward to the field trip on Tuesday. Classroom activities will revolve around the following topics.
Reading: In class project will be done in to wrap the book Crow Call Also, we will read Esparanza Rising and discuss literary elements
Math 83 -- 85 will be taught and activities will be completed in class to reinforce the concepts
Science: Solar System will be taught and study guide will be given for test on Thursday
Spelling Test will be given on Thursday because it is a short week.
Islamic Studies: Wrap up chapter on Salah
Social Studies: Analyze the causes of Mexican independence from Spain. Students will be tested after Spring Break Insha Allah

Math: lessons 81 --- 84 I review on Friday
Math homework is given almost every night.
Tests are are administered after every ten lessons. I do a thorough review prior to the day of the test.
Language Arts: (Reading, Grammar, Writing, and Spelling) This period we will be reading Esperenza
and as with other readers I do daily assessments and if anything major is done i will inform you in advance. In Grammar we are doing parts of speech (adverbs and prepositions) As a reinforcement of grammar I do Daily Language Review almost every day. Writing is done at least two times a week, with emphasis figurative language. Spelling test is given every Friday and the words are reviewed thoroughly prior to the test.
Science: I will be covering the Solar System this week, and I will use the weekly and the text book to reinforce the topic. Science test will be on Wednesday and I will give a study guide to make it easy on the students.
Social Studies: I will cover independence of Mexico from Spain and its impact on Texas. I will inform you about any test ASAP InshaAllah.
Islamic Studies: Prayer schedule and benefits of Jumuah Prayers.

After a two year sabbatical, Ms. Khan, as she is fondly remembered by students and
administrators alike, returns to the institution that she joined in the very first year it was established.
As an instructor she worked relentlessly to improve student performance and scores on
standardized tests (Iowa/TAKS). Results from them testify her hard work. With over twenty years of
teaching experience, Ms. Khan firmly believes that teaching is like a driver’s license. One has to
renew it to keep pace with time. Armed with two Master’s degrees (UHCL & Chittagong
University, Bangladesh), and Texas Teachers Certificate in Social Studies Composite from UHCL,
she can tackle any challenge in any classroom and has a passion for teaching. She holds the firm
belief that every child is unique and a teacher needs to do some detective work to bring out the
untapped wealth that each child possesses. A strong enforcer of discipline, she creates a
classroom environment where students feel secure, confident and enthusiastic in the learning
